Thyroid Q & A

What is the thyroid?

Your thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front part of your neck that makes thyroid hormone. This hormone helps regulate your metabolism, or how fast your body burns calories and maintains essential functions. When left untreated, thyroid hormone problems can cause harmful, even debilitating, symptoms and complications.

Examples of thyroid disorders include:

  • Thyroid nodules
  • Thyroid inflammation
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone)
  • Hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone)
  • Goiter (enlarged thyroid gland)

Many of these conditions require treatment to reduce the risk of complications.

What are the symptoms of thyroid disorders?

Common symptoms of a thyroid disorder include:

  • Appetite changes
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Hair or skin changes
  • More or less energy than usual
  • Mood changes
  • Changes in menstruation in women
  • Problems focusing or remembering things
  • Feeling too hot or too cold
  • Sleeping difficulty
  • Muscle aches or pains
  • Constipation
  • Other changes in bowel patterns

Thyroid disorders are more common in women than in men. At the first sign of a hormone problem, see the specialists at TRiiBE Medical LLC for an evaluation.

How does my doctor diagnose thyroid diseases?

To determine if you have a problem with your thyroid gland, the specialists at TRiiBE Medical LLC discuss your symptoms and medical history with you. They check your vital signs, complete a physical examination, and feel the thyroid gland in your neck.

The providers also recommend you undergo blood tests and sometimes a thyroid biopsy or an ultrasound to develop a more in-depth picture of the health of your thyroid gland.

What are the treatments for thyroid problems?

If you have a thyroid disorder, the TRiiBE Medical LLC specialists might recommend you take medications, undergo radioiodine therapy, or have all or part of your thyroid gland removed during minor surgery. They may refer you to an endocrinologist if needed.

If you have thyroid cancer, you might need additional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy, to prevent cancer from spreading to other parts of your body.
